RE-TranscriPro does not take on digitization of antiquarian documents.
However, we regularly work with a contractor who provides quality service: Digiscrib.

Digitization

Digitization is the creation of a graphic representation of a document, book or any other object that the computer can interpret. It is used for the conversion from paper to a binary format, which becomes a virtual document, one that may be stored and manipulated in a digital format (by computer, via CD-ROM, as an eBook, accessible by PDA, etc.).

This virtual document can then be processed to be adapted to particular needs, for correction, or for OCR processing in order to convert the image into data, then index it in a database.

There are several advantages to this dematerialization of a paper document or object:
- Protection of the patrimonial document,
- Facilitation of the manipulation of works and documents,
- Facilitation of indexing, classifying, and searching for information,
- Making available works and documents that are very valuable and protected,
- Sharing works and documents over the Internet.
Thus, a document that is delicate or inaccessible to the public at large is reborn, as researchers or casual readers have access to the digitized work, and its quality, its typography, its colors and its content are perfectly preserved.

Digiscrib a company specialized in the digitization of books and documents.

The premises of Digiscrib have been adapted to allow special attention to books, documents, or any other paper medium.

The texts are only manipulated with 100% cotton gloves. They are stored and digitized in rooms that maintain a constant temperature and humidity level. When they are not being digitized, they are safely stored in a fireproof safe. The premises of the company respect the requirements of the Bibliothèque Nationale de France.

Very particular attention is given to the steps of manipulating the text. The safe and the scanner are in the same room, so the text will not be moved from room to room, which might otherwise expose it to variations of temperature and humidity. If possible, the text is digitized in one session, keeping human manipulation at an absolute minimum between its storage place, the safe, and the scanner.

Digiscrib has the most recent technology at its disposal, including specialized scanners, software and programs.

In order to guarantee optimal, high-quality results, Digiscrib is associated with major producers of digitization equipment, like Zeutschel and Ricoh.

Digiscrib possesses equipment that is perfectly adapted to old collections or delicate documents, like the OS12000 by Zeutschel: a machine equipped with a scanner that digitizes work without direct contact, on a support surface that respects the binding of the work, offering high resolution (600 dpi); sophisticated and powerful programs, like OMNISCAN, which provides several forms of output, JPG, TIFF, and PNG files, among others; a system that corrects curved pages of the book, etc.

Digiscrib also possesses flat scanners which meet the expectations of high-volume, high-quality digitization of documents (up to 600 dpi), capable of scanning both sides of a document, etc

This high technology is combined with high-performance image manipulation software to verify the quality of the images obtained by the scanners, or to adapt them to the needs of the client.

Optical character recognition (OCR)

Very often, the goal of digitization is to allow manipulation of the text contained in the digitized books and documents.

The conversion of an image, the graphic representation of a text, into a veritable searchable text is possible thanks to optical character recognition (OCR)

For the OCR processing of books and documents, Digiscrib uses the most recent, most sophisticated, and the most high-performance software on the market (FineReader, Tesseract, etc.).

Digiscrib offers a great range of file formats for the final version of the text or data (PDF, Word, txt, etc.), be it directly via OCR, or by a later manipulation of the data.
